PORSON, RICHARD (–), Greek scholar, was born on 25 Dec. at East Ruston, near North Walsham, Norfolk, where his father, Huggin Porson, was parish clerk; his mother, Anne, was the daughter of a shoemaker named Palmer in the neighbouring village of Bacton.
Richard was the second of four children, having two brothers and a sister. RICHARD PORSON was born on Christmas Day,in the poor Norfolk village of East Ruston. His father, Huggin Porson, was a weaver, and had married a shoemaker’s daughter, one Anne Palmer, from a neighbouring village.
Huggin’s wife, like many of the poorer people in the eighteenth century, had apparently spent some time in service. Richard Porson had a remarkable memory.
